Had you pulled the radio unit out to check on anything prior to turning it on? I know that sometimes people write the radio codes on masking tape, and stick it on the "inner body" of the radio. I pulled mine out, had similar symptoms to yours (though mine isn't a CD player, and THAT part does stump me!)--my problem was that, in pulling the unit out, I'd accidentally disconnected the antenna wire. I know I'm being "Captain Obvious" here, but it had me hung up for a few days...

Hope that helps!

Option 1: You could send your radio to a repair company - this will cost you about $160 - $175 and they might actually fix it.

Option 2: Go to eBay and enter "volvo 816" in the search field (without the quotes). I just checked, as of this writing there are 37 units available (there are also 9 SC-815's, but get the SC-816, it's newer, has more power). The prices range from $50 up. Buy one from a seller with high feedback, watch out for the shipping charge. Quick eBay search lesson: dashes are like spaces, no need for "SC" in your search string. You could enter "volvo (radio, cd, cassette)", but you'd have to plow through 1,800 hits to find the 37 radios.

Option 3: By a new one from Crutchfield or somebody like that. No fun futzing around with cable harnesses, etc., won't look original, the 816 is a nice radio/cd unit.

I got rid of my factory radio a long time ago, such a POS.
Anyway I replaced with Blaupunkt.

Midwest Electronics is US distributor of Blaupunkt:

For under $99, you can get (figure out what you want first, then call them for advice):
Blaupunkt Brisbane SD48 model has no CD player, only USB port.
Blaupunkt Seattle MP5 has CD player.

From every account I've come accross, the claim is: Same unit. Different colored face...

Your post is not clear on a few items.... First, why did you have to enter the code again? If it was something like the battery being disconnected then the code should work. Second... Did you remove the radio from the car? If so why? What did you do to it when it was out? The radio should work as good as it was before removal provided you reconnected everything correctly. Check all of the wires and antenna coax. I hate to say what is next, but.... Sometimes well intenioned owners can really screw something up by attempting to repair a problem without knowing what they are doing. Is it possible you did this? I once worked on a home stereo system for eight hours tracing down a problem. Despite asking the owner repeatedly if he or anyone else had attempted to repair it, he deined any thing of the sort and swore it just quit working. After I found the problem (he pulled wires out of a connector and just stuck them back in randomly) he admitted what he had done. I was pissed and my bill reflected this. What might have been a 30 minute repair took all day because he refused to admit he had screwed the thing up in the first place. I'm not trying to hammer on you here, but for accurate advice to be given, it would be helpful to post exactly what happened in the first place.

Lastly, If you are looking for a Volvo replacement, try Volvo Salvage in Vilonia, Arkansas. The numbers are (501) 849 3119 and (501) 849 2484. One of these, I believe the latter is a fax number. This is a fairly large operation. He is always willing to negotiate a price in good faith, but do not come on to him like he is an idiot. I've bought a fair amount of stuff from him and have always been treated well. I live close to his business, so I can't say how well his shipping policy works. I've always been treated fairly and honestly by him.
