need quick input on 2002 XC...

Post by carboncow »

I've got a 2001 T5 and have had a few common growning pains with my used V70 T5.

I got a buddy who LOVES our car and found a great deal on a 2002 XC with 120K for about $5500, which is good for our market. Outside of the obvious car concerns for this age and mileage I cannot recall the years of "concern" in the early years of this body style.

I seem to recall some said the 01 and 02 were issues with ETM or the transmissions...or was that only the 2001?

He did find a 2004 (and I know that is a far better year plus newer) but it's far away and not such a great price, so I'm telling him to look at the 2002 again very hard since it's close to home...but I wanted to find out from the "guru" here if a 2002 is a more problematical car, or not.

I'll continue to re-read through the forum this evening but if anyone wants to comment on this rehashed discussion, please toss your comments around!

Maybe I'm missing a sticky somewhere on buying recommendations by year!

2002's were slightly better than 2001's. The 2001 transmissions had a stop-neutral feature that ended up killing most of them by this point. The 2002's don't have this, but the transmissions are still not very strong. ETM issues also exist in the 2002.

For an XC, really you'd want to tell him to go 2003-later. The AWD system is no longer purely mechanical in those (which also have a high failure rate on the early models), the transmissions were less problematic, and the ETM no longer exists.

To find a good car, you may have to expand your search radius as far as 100 miles. I happened across a few years ago that were pure junk, and almost ended up driving 3 hours to go look at one, when I found an ad for one just across town. And that's the one I bought :D

FYI
2002XCs have no ETM issues, different design
Only a handfull of 2.4 EARLY 02 NON turbos have the older MM ETM

So good ETMs, better tranmissions...so a 2002 is worth looking at the right price then!
