Fuel tank recall for 2004. Do recalls expire?

Post by bronxnativ »

I have a heavy fuel smell coming from passenger side rear of car (after I turn it off). No gas leaks that I can see. After reading the posts, I assumed (maybe a correct assumption) that I need to replace the fuel filter. After pulling the recalls online, I discovered that their is a recall for the fuel tank dated 2004. Question is: does this recall expire after a certain period of time or are recalls indefinite?

They do indeed expire but they are often extended:

I called my local dealer earlier this week to see if mine had been repaired. He took the last 6 #'s off the vin and looked it up. Mine had not been repaired but is covered, He said to bring it in if I wanted but I was not getting the "paying customer" attitude.

From what I can tell its 3 bolts on that small heat sheild. I would rather do it myself (of course mine is not leaking)and just add some bushing to avoid the hassle.

I just had my heat shield done last week on my "new" 96 TLA wagon. When I call Volvo 800 number, the lady told me, "no recall will be expired". Why don't you call Volvo first?
BTW, I was also told that they will replace the tank if it needs to be.

definitely have the dealership do it - they get plenty of money from Volvo for that work and shouldn't care if you're paying them. They'll also look for other problems so they can get some more work out of you, but if you take their diagnosis and come back here you'll have a nice checklist of projects to keep yourself busy.

Update:
Hey guys,
Called Volvo and rep says that my car is an "overseas" car. Has to get that issue resolved before recall for fuel tank can be authorized. Not clear as to why my "overseas" status would need authorization, but I'll keep everyone posted. I intend to call back if no call from him by next Monday.

Aren't they all 'overseas' cars?

What he meant was that my car was purchased privately overseas then brought to the U.S. by the 1st owner.
