Re: Oil leak from turbo

Post by jblackburn »

Is there any way you can get me a picture of what's leaking from under the car itself?

It sounds like maybe he is talking about the lines that go to the turbocharger (at the back of the engine rather than to the radiator) itself.

Get me a picture of where it's leaking, or have him describe it for me, and I can tell you what you need to order.

Usually the lines are pretty solid back there; the turbo return line that dumps back into the oil pan usually only needs a new gasket if it is leaking. The coolant lines at the back of the engine there are another story altogether.

I bought two oil lines (oil cooler lines), inlet and outlet/upper and lower, because I was told my "Turbo oil lines" need replacing. Well today I was told I bought the wrong lines.

What other lines/hoses are related to the Turbo - and transport oil to and/or from it? Is this "oil return line" different from what I bought?
Your mechanic is correct, the oil cooler lines do not run to the turbo. The turbo oil supply line runs from the top of the turbocharger to the back of the engine block, on the passenger side. You can find a brand new one on ebay for about $45. There are different listings, so make sure your exact car/engine model is listed.

I'm linking to an ebay ad so you can see the correct one. These are used, but it shows both the turbo oil feed and return lines. The feed line is the larger, contorted looking one. If you do replace it, you'll also want to replace the banjo bolts and washers on each side of the line. 19 mm at the engine side. I can't remember if that one is 19 or 17mm at the turbo.

For the record, this is the company I bought mine from. The one I ordered is indeed a genuine Volvo part and fit perfectly on my S70.

Is the oil return line under the turbo an easy fix?

If you didn't have an AWD model, I'd say yes; I was done with that and an oil change in under 45 minutes. But from what I understand on the AWD models the bevel gear is right smack in your way.

Hey - thanks a lot guys, for the quick responses. I'll check those links.

The oil seems to be coming from the rear passenger-ish side of the engine, I think. But also near the front. I'm thinking maybe it's both; the turbo oil return line, AND the oil cooler inlet & outlet lines...

So you say it may just be the gasket is gone on the turbo oil return line? I believe I have that one (looks like a rounded diamond shape - green in color). I'm gonna have to get somebody with access to a lift to get under and check everything so I can get some definitive answers I guess.

Thanks again.

Yes, and I've gotten plenty of practice. It is a torx with a universal joint. You can do it.

I have a 96 850R. My son replaced the turbo oil return line gasket (at the turbo) and the o-ring (at the oil pan) last night. Still, there is an oil leak from the turbo area. My son said it leaked a 4 inch diameter circle of oil when he parked the car after driving it for a while. Is there also a turbo inlet seal? Sorry if I missed this info in this thread.

It should be pretty easy to spot where the leak is if it leaked that much.

I had real trouble with the oil return line on my turbo. Specifically where it enters the side of the engine. Volvo has an upgraded o-ring for this and until I used it, I had a perpetual leak. Make sure that you use the correct o-ring (no after market stuff worked for me) and that you line everything up perfectly. Btw, I even tried to use RTV and other sealing products on that spot but until I cleaned it all out and fit it in just right (making sure the pipe wasn't bent too), was I able to seal off that leak.
