New to MVS - Just saying hello

Hi everyone. As the title says, I am new to Matthew's Volvo Site and wanted to say hello. Since getting my daughter a 1996 850 last year, I have mostly been going onto the Volvo Forums, but I got an email from Matt today about a tutorial I wrote and I saw his/this website. I like this site and the vast info that is available here. The main repair I have done to our 850 since getting it was the head gasket. It had a leaking heater core (1st one of those I'd ever done also) and it got overheated a time or two (they now pay more attention to the temperature needle lol). I ended up writing a tutorial for the HG replacement (and other stuff while getting to it). I posted the link on the other forum and I think it is referenced here too.

Anyway, I am a paramedic/fireman in SE Alabama (USA). I have been married for over 22 years and have two grown daughters. I have always worked on my own stuff, starting out small with oil changes and brake pads when I was a teenager. My brother and I kind of had to learn how to repair cars growing up because we are both too cheap to buy (and make payments on) new cars. We tend to keep a vehicle until it is ready for the junkyard lol. Our brother-in-law is a car salesman and he says he is glad everyone is not like us (haha).

Welcome! I'm new to the site also. Still nice to meet you. I agree that there is tons and tons of resourceful information on here. Which you obviously contributed too, so thanks also for that.

Welcome! My dad owned all of our cars growing up, as did I...and I learned how to do almost everything on them including complete teardowns of entire vehicles. it is good stuff to know. Someday if I ever make any [real] money, I'll probably pay someone else to do it! Nothing like leaving your keys with someone else and saying "I'll be back at 5."

When I was 10-12 years old, I fixed my bicycles, everything from A to Z.
When I was 14 I rebuild Honda 50cc engine.
So very much like yourself, I learned to fix things as a kid, which is sadly going away nowadays.
So I value things I own and fix them until they die.

So welcome to the forum.

I think the 850 and 1997 and 1998 V/S70 are one of the best ever built by Volvo. The later models are not that good. Sometimes mfg makes things better, sometimes worse.
Anyway, hang on to your Volvo, they will last a very long time!!!

Well its nice to have another grease fingered Volvo head on board here. The big stuff on these cars is easy. The small stuff can be a pain in the neck
