How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.
Hello All,
I am new to MVS and have been reading a lot and getting a lot of useful info from here and decided to join Here's my question. I have a 1995 850 non turbo wagon. I've done the 960 throttle plate swap, doing the home made cold air intake now and am wondering which exhaust would be best now. Down pipe? High flow cat? Diameter pipe to use? Muffler? Also do I really need the hot air connection from the exhaust manifold to the air box? I'm in CA. and it doesn't get that cold. Can I cap it off?
Thanks for any input in advance. This site is great.
I have not seen any listed for the n/a models. Ozark Lee says if you call OBX they have them but do not list it on their site. I see plenty of catbacks for turbo models. I was wondering myself if it is really different post cat (na vs. fi), or do they not recommend using 2.5" piping on the na? I know for my nissan, they say the exhausts are different from ka24 to sr20 but it really is the same even from the downpipe on 95+ models.
You keep asking this on several forums, the answer is the same
NONE
You're not going to be able to make your car go much quicker than it does now.
no one supports this engine, essentially an engine that can't be modded.
You will spend $2000 to get maybe 15 hp, that's IT!

No one makes an exhaust for NA volvos because it is not worth it. If you want more performance, sell your NA and get a turn model. It would be cheaper then buying performance parts for the NA, if you can even find any.
Actually OBX does sell a real header - as was said, you kinda need to call them to get it or they occasionally have one up on eBay.
The price is right and it is very well constructed. If you have EGR the location and angle of the EGR pipe is different and it is a battle to get the line to the EGR valve line mated back up
Does it help performance? I don't know. The flex joint on my son's car had completely broken in two so he was running with no restriction out of the OEM exhaust manifold. It definitely quieted the car down from its open header stage but he reported absolutely no difference in performance. The mileage got better since it cleared the persistent CEL that threw the car into limp mode due to the O2 sensors not reading anything.
The OBX header also doesn't have any real provisions to bolt the lower part of the heat shield down so you need to be creative there as well but that was minor.
A friend has the OBX header and a modified rear section on his 95 NA. I really can't say it turned it into a race car but he seems to think it helped a little.
Cost wise performance upgrades for your NA engine don't make too much sense. I would concentrate more on cosmetics.
