We are continuing to search for a a Cross Country and have found one that the seller says makes a short clunk when shifting into reverse. Also he claims the vehicle has had routine work done at the local Volvo shop but can't answer a question about why the timing belt was changed at 101K. Should I be concerned? I would think that if he claims routine work was done then he should be able to say if the belt was changed as speced or driven until it broke...
thanks again guys!

The clunk is probably the front motor mount.
Quite simple to check. Volvo should have caught that.
And if the car is running? The belt didn't break.
Valves usually bend when that happens.

+1
On both accounts. I had the same thing on my 850 turbo. I ended up replacing all the mounts and the cluck went away. The car shifted overall a lot better.
As for the TB, BE is right. If that belt broke, your head would be toast, if not the whole motor.
