Yes. Thanks for these Bill!

So here's more to the story. I took the 90 in for an alignment and for them to tell me if the bearing indeed was damaged. They performed a half alignment because the driver side tie rod ends were "seized" and they weren't able to complete the alignment. So after telling me that I could pay $440 to get new tie rods and then have my alignment completed, I decided to pay $50, buy the parts from fcpgroton and take it back in for the "other half of the alignment."

Yes, I realize this is hokey of the dealer to perform a half alignment and THEN tell me the tie rods are seized. Why not check the tie rods FIRST then proceed with the alignment!!!??? They don't see it that way, but did agree (since I was upset enough) to do the remainder of the alignment for no additional charge, after I replace the tie rods myself.

So... do you have tie rod replacement specs (w/ torquing specs)? I was told by the mechanic at the dealer that there is a torquing spec for one of the tie rods (i suppose it would be the inner?)...

BTW, the bearing checked out "ok" with a stethoscope.... I'll keep an ear out for the bearing to determine if the noise gets worse.

Thanks so much for the help. This is too funny....

Did they try to free them? My son's 19 year old Talbot Express went in for alignment and the young lad doing it muttered something unintelligible, got out his oil gun, sprayed everything, crawled out from under, told us the tie rod was seized so it would take a little longer, had a cup of coffee, went back under, grunted a couple of times and 5 minutes later the job was done. We had had the van 6 years when this happened and goodness knows how long before that the tie rods had been worked on but he took it in his stride and we went away happy.

As far as I can find out the inner tie rod torque is 90nm and the lock nut between outer and inner is 70nm.

He apparently did try to free them. Not sure he used any oil, but it's pretty evident that he tried because the threading that screws into the outer tie rod was marred up quite a bit. What's peculiar about this "seized" tie rod bit is that the gentleman an hour ahead of me was told the same thing. He was in there for an alignment and the fellow then came out to tell him that his tie rods were seized and that they were going to need replacing. So when I got the news about mine, I did have much skepticism.

I'll try to free them myself and if it's not too difficult then I'll know they were up to making some extra money.

Thanks for the specs on the nut and the inner rod!

Best to you now...

Bill, are you able to determine if there are any angle-tightens on the either of the tie rods or their bolts? I'm remembering the mechanic mentioning an angle-tighten, but may have misunderstood.

Thanks kindly.
