850 blower motor

hi,
i recently bought a 94' 850 with about 212,000 miles on it, i talked the guy down to $800 because the heater made a really loud noise when it was on, now last week i went to turn the heater on and nothing happened, no sounds, no airflow, no nothing, i was looking at an old thread on here on how to replace the blower motor and it looks pretty simple but i just wanted to make sure that it was the blower motor and also if you guys think i should replace the resistor too. THANKS!

If it was noisy, it's probably just time for a motor.
Some advocate changing both at once, but if the resistor/power
stage is still OK, just a motor swap should be fine. Stay Warm!

Agreed. Change the motor first; if it only runs on high afterwards, it took the resistor with it.

If the motor was making noise it needs to be either serviced or replaced. Sometimes you get lucky and, if you catch it quick enough, it doesn't take out the blower resistor or the power stage depending on which system you have. The reverse is the worse when you put in a new resistor / power stage and the old bad motor blows it again. The resistors / power stages cost more than the motor itself.

lee..so if i replace the motor is it safe to run with a blown resistor? should i just buy a new motor to start or should i get both? thanks!

it's ok to stick a new motor in. if the resistor if bad, like stated, it will run on high always
shorts and increased amp flow in a bad motor burn out the resistor
I have a 99 v70xc at 146K and just bought a new fan motor to stick in it...

Running a new blower motor with a bad resistor will cause no further harm. Either it won't work at all, it will run full blast all the time - even key off so you will need to remove the fuse - or it will only work on speed 4 if you have the MCC. From there you need to deal with the blower resistor (MCC) / Power Stage (ECC).

The real danger is replacing the blower resistor / power stage first only to have it blow up again due to a bad blower.

Question,

I just changed my blower motor, but I'm waiting on a resistor from a scrap yard.

Will a resistor from a 93 - 98 work in my 96, or do I need to get one from a 96 only?

This question might be on here already but it'll be a whole lot of searching.

As long as the climate control system is the same (manual or auto), the resistor from any year will fit.

I would NOT use a used resistor.
I would go with a used blower motor first before using a used resistor.
That's like putting in a new SAS pump and installing a used resistor!!!
