Labor on suspension?

Post by upstate NY »

So I finally got my 95 850 wagon on the road last week. I discovered a broken spring on the rear driver side, my front strut on the driver side is loose, all around it is just a noisy bumpy ride. I would love to do the work myself but do not have all of the proper tools nor the time. What would be a safe estimate on the Labor for an all around suspension change? Parts I have an idea, I just don't want to get ripped off. Thanks for any feed back!

5 hours. It will take an actual 3.5 to r&r the struts and rear springs, in my garage at home without a lift. A Volvo tech can do it much faster, but you are paying him for his experience and peace of mind.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

Sounds about right. Looking through my records, my local indy Volvo specialist charged me $570 total inclusive of tax to install all new suspension at 4 corners, sway bars, endlinks, strut mounts, etc and to do a 4 wheel alignment.

Where are you located? I spent $710 for above work. I'm in Baltimore MD.

In the Twin Cities, labor is now at $100/hr and the dealer is $130. Makes me wish I could go south for a good garage.

I asked for an extimate to replace the front struts, not the rear shocks, and the indie said $1100. Did it my self, an alignment cost me $100.

Upstate NY. The mechanic is a Volvo specialist though - so prices are generally lower than someone who hasn't done the job 500 times already. Well, that, and they are just fair all-around.

if u wanted to make the slight invest ment and have the tools you will need
jack stands $30
floor jack $30
18mm Deep Socket
18mm closed wrench
13mm closed wrench
crescent wrench
spring compressors (which u can rent)

there are some other small things along the way but really id rather spend 200$ on new tools for my suspension job then pay some one else to do it.

on another note i recently replaced my whole front end and the biggest help is a torch to heat the rusted on bolts.
i bought everything through FCP including koni FSD shocks, total cost was probably about $500 but if u got for normal shocks your looking at some where short of $300 tops
