coolant level

I will look again, this problem has become intermittant now, one minute it comes on and half hour later it goes off. If it was a bad sensor wouldn't you think it would either be on all the time or not at all?

My tank has the extra hose going to the back of the engine compartment. I turned it upside down and didn't see any sensor nor wires.

Thats mega weird. Can you post a pic? I'm having the same issue on my S80 T6 since I rebuilt the top end. In my case I reseated the connector and it helped for a while. I have more important stuff on the list right now so I'll just keep checking my level daily.

I will post pics tomorrow, but I removed the coolant tank again and notice that there are two hoses going to it on top, one from the right and one from the left. There is a third hose, larger than the other two that comes out from the bottom right rear. I notice that there is a cut out on the bottom of the tank where the sensor should go. I don't see any sensors in the tank.

Here are the pictures of my coolant tank. As you can see there isn't a coolant level sensor in it, but it has three hoses coming out of it.

Just went out and looked at my XC90 (Mine is a T5 Automatic - 5cyl turbo). You will need to remove the tank and look at the bottom. The sensor should be located there. I did notice my sensor had alot of dirt/grime on/around it, so I cleaned it off and used some dialectic grease to help keep moisture out of the contacts.

I did look at the bottom, there is another hose coming off ot it. No sensor, no wires just hoses.

I am curious, I wonder if straight coolant rather than 50/50 would make a difference?

Possibly, but it sounds like your sensor is located somewhere else (maybe the thermostat housing)? Another possibility is that you have air in your cooling system causing your ECM to register the low level message intermittently.

Do you have the ability to flush and fill your radiator, and at the same time to put a vacuum on the system to make sure there are no leaks?

I think that's a possibility. I noticed that when I accellerate quickly it comes on. I will be having it flushed out.
