Looked at a 850 Turbo.. Have some questions

Post by 2p3capri »

Hello,

Im new to the volvo world (I'm a blue blooded Ford nut normaily 8) ) And I was looking around for a nice car to use as a daily driver (so my "fun" car can get the R&R it deserves).

I found a 94 850 Turbo for a striking price. After looking at it, the interior is well worn so to speak, nothing out of the ordonary, but this car was clearly well driven.

With 141k on the clock and the last service record of a 70k checkup in the maintenance booklet, its a given it needs a timeing belt done, but other than that all looked and sounded well under the hood. When first started, the vac/boost guage was working fine, but mid way though the test drive, it completely stopped working (in the center). My question is, is that guage a Vacuum guage, or electronic? I just need to know how hard it would be to get it working. (if its vaccumm it needs to be fixed or capped)

The other problem with it was the power window switches which ive heard are famous for dieing. The pass window refused to go up and i would imagine thats just the switch, but just wanted to pass it by this board to see if you have any other ideas.

On the annoying issues are the headliner on the privacy shade is loose at the back preventing the shade from going back. How hard is it to take this part out and glue it back down? And finnaly, the CD Changer the cartrage does not want to eject, is this common? any way to fix it easily?

On the plus side, it ran great, stopped good, no idiot lights were on, was fully loaded, and looked great from the outside. The climate control was also blowing cold air (which was easy to notice as it was 92 today  )

Other than these small issues, i was very impressed with the car, and can get it as is for $3500 which i think is good. Im a car guy and love working on cars and I'm no stranger to Turbo's (you can see my car here )

Thank you again,

Kevin

The CD cartridge on my Cd changer (1997 850) was stuck when I bought it.
I took it apart (easy enough, just four screws) and removed the cause, which was a jammed CD. The in line fuse had also gone (probably due to repeated attempts to unjam the cd)
Having put it all back together it works fine now. I also have the 6CDs belonging to the previous owner that were stuck in the cartridge but I'm not sure this is a bonus

That guage operates on vacuum; I'm sure you know how to deal with vacuum leaks since you already own a turbo car. On the windows, some cars have problems and some don't. My car has never had any service done at all on the window, but some people have replaced some things in there two or three times. Maybe regulator? My specialty is under the hood, but I'm sure there are some people here could help you out with the interior issues.

I figured it was a vac guage (electric boost guages are expensive and all) and i could of sworn I could hear a hissing underboost that didnt sound much like the turbo. I guess the real question is, where under the hood does it connect (i didnt really see a traditonal vacuum tree like im used to in my ford).

Also, I guess what I truely want to know is, Do you think the car is worth the asking price with these small issues it has?

Check under the first air intake (just behind the raditaor support between the L/H light and the fan) for a hard black plastic hose. There is a rubber connector there that seems to be a weak link. I just bought a '95 850 turbo wagon had it stop working after looking around the air filter housing. The intake piece was loose and before I could do anything to it I saw the loose hose, put it back together and the turbo boost gage works fine. Hope that helps.

All '93s and early 94s required a 50K belt change. If yours is an early '94 it's about ready for the 3rd change. Remember at that mileage to change the tensioner. 3M has a spray glue that can be used for the headliner. www.volvospeed.com has info about the removal of the sunroof.
