I think what the trans is actually doing is sticking in gear. It tries to come out and gets stuck, then gets unstuck and engages with a bang. It doesn't slip (yet).
If you see one, by all means send it my way! I'd totally be up for that!pkc303 wrote: I'm not sure about the P2 cars, but if you have a P1, I think you could buy a whole car for $800 with a blown head gasket and then take the transmission. Send the rest of the car to the junk yard. Don't know how handy you are with a wrench, but it's an option.

Priapism,
Trust what these guy's tell ya. I myself have a 01 V70 and my transmission had all the issues you are having including "like chocolate" transmission fluid and clunks when changing gear. I went thru 2 transmission flushes, updated the B4 Servo and replaced my lower torque rod. Also like everyone say's go to your dealer and have them check the transmission software and do a reset. My local dealer acutally did it all for free which was shocking. After all was said and done I have put 33k on the car and haven't had any issues with the transmission and I'm about to do a flush to make sure I don't have any issues again.
Just curious have you replaced the lower torque rod? After I did all the flushes and B4 Servo update I still had random clunks till I found that my lower torque rod was shot. Once replaced it shifted like new.

I can second Zero's comment about the torque mounts. They are easy to replace and will solve some of the hard shifting/ clunks when accelerating from a coast and or stop. If you continue to drive a car with hard shifts then the transmission's life will be shorter than if it was shifting smoothly. Others have also suggested using seafoam for transmissions, I would try it after you have drained and filled/ or flushed the tranny 4-5 times and have replaced the servo cover and checked all the engine/ transmission mounts and still have hard shifts. I do not like the idea of putting solvents/ additives into things unless I have very little to loose. (My intent is not to start a flame war, just saying that I have tried similar products and have seen less than desirable results.) Seafoam claims it is 100% safe, but I think the limit of their guarantee is the cost of the product and not the cost of the equipment.
