'99 S80 Brake Control Module part+labor = $1k

Day 14 of my dad's S80 in the McDonald Volvo shop, since it was returned to the dealer (for the third time) -- December 1.

Day 71 of the whole fiasco, when my dad took his S80 to McDonald Volvo to find out what was causing the many dashboard lights and messages -- October 4.

He's reached his limit, and my limit on how long he can borrow my 850. I need it so that our family has a car while I do spring seats and control arm bushings on our V70 R wagon.

He left a detailed, stern message today on the service writer's voicemail that he needs an exact date when he can have his car back, or he's going in tomorrow to collect it.

Hey Matthew,

So what happened between the 10th and the 14th?

Was the CEM replaced or ?

Sounds like there was some "development" and the car went back home again only to be shortly returned because it wasn't fixed...?

And it sounds like the car is going back home now with your Dad temporarily cuz you need a car and the dealer already knows it's coming back?

Grensuvs,

CEM was not replaced. Dave (tech) couldn't get it to recreate the conditions of lights/hard starting despite driving it daily for a week, so the thinking was that the BCM was the fix. The tech writer Andy also drove it home a few times. He also could not trigger the problem.

So the S80 was at the dealer shop from Dec 1 to Dec 14. My Dec 14 post did not reflect the fact that my dad got his car back that day.

When I wrote He paid, drove home for a few days, the problem returned. Then he took the car back, and that's where we are today I was speaking about late November. The Then he took the car back... happened on Dec 1.

So, the same day he got it back, Dec 14, the problem sprang up. Same day. Don't understand how he can do it and the dealer people can't? Neither do I. It's just the nature of cars to do this. I think looking for answers to things like that is a "fool's errand".

So from the 15th to the 18th (yesterday morning) he drove his S80 and experienced the same event several times. Yesterday afternoon he took it back in, spoke to someone high in the organization, but this time got a loaner 2011 XC70. The manager (sorry, I don't remember who it is) apologized and said it'd be top priority at the shop. So it's back in.

Pink = Car in shop
Blue = Car with dad

All things considered, I think they're treating my dad nicely, and likewise he's being polite with them.

Finally they replaced the CEM and sent the car home to my dad. That was on the 21st. SO FAR, it's ok. But he hasn't been driving it every day since then because he was out of town. I'll report more in a week or so.

No charge for the CEM, beyond the $1k he's spent on the other parts/labor.

No problems. He drives it every day, I'd estimate 5-20 miles per.

Hi Matt,

Can you post any more info there is on the original problems, particularly any messages on the dash that came up, and what error codes the car was giving when it was on the Volvo troubleshooting system?

It could help a lot to finding out if others (including me) have the same problem.

I'll ask him. I don't remember if he told me specific messages, or if during the diagnostics runs they wrote down any codes for him.
