This is a time-lapse of my 2004 Volvo V70 R strut getting a new spring seat. Always replace spring seats with heavy duty XC90 seats, Volvo part # 30683637.
  • compress spring,
  • spray Liquid Wrench on the top nut,
  • remove top end parts,
  • show old spring seat vs. new,
  • put new spring seat on,
  • add back top end parts in correct order,
  • uncompress springs. Done.
Always be careful with spring compressors. Think about it: each holds up the weight of 1/4 of the car, so roughly up to a thousand pounds. The potential energy stored in a compressed spring is enough to break bones, or worse.
