Hello. On a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT wagon with 183,000 miles, how much life is left on this wagon. I am considering buy it. I checked with the dealership and this VOLVO has been maintained extremely well. Never missed a beat.
Question?
1.How much life or miles left?
2. What kind of things can go wrong at 183,000 miles?
Thanks so much

The key is how well it was maintained. Some things to find out:
1. Was the timing belt changed within the last 70k?
2. Was the transmission fluid flushed about every 25K?
3. Has the brake fluid been replaced about every 30k?
A lot of things start to wear out by 100K, such as struts, CV boots, plug wires, dist. cap & rotor, brake rotors, etc. You might be looking at doing some of that maint. the second time in a year or so.
Paying $25 for a CarFax report is worth it to see if it was ever in a wreck.
Some people on the boards are starting to log over 250K on 850s.
The high mileage world record holder is a Volvo---over 2 million miles.

Thanks for replying.
The timing belt was done at 142000.
waterpump February -00
139,000 replace evaporater-may 02
Major serice at 15200
The wagon has 183000 on it? Anyone want to give me a guesstimate ?
This car has been maintained.
How much should I pay?
They (used car dealer) are asking 2995.00
What do you think is the most I should pay?
I appreciate any advice and input.
Thanks,
Laura

Laura,
I don't think that is a bad price for that car, and I am assuming they offer some sort of warranty on it for a month or so. I also assume you have driven it and everything seems to be working well? No strange noises or vibrations? This car should last awhile but there are never any guarantees.

Many people go well over 300k miles w/ these cars assuming that maintenance is done properly. $2995 seems a bit high to me; I'd try to get it down to $2500 or so.

How do you deal when trying to get a fair price?
What words do you use?
Thanks,
Laura
