S60 Start Issue

Post by ico »

I am able to start my car but after a few seconds the car shuts down by itself. There is no CEL on at the moment. I'm not sure what to do right now to diagnose it.

This sounds like an antenna ring issue to read the chip in your key. If it doesn't detect the chip, it will shut the motor down to prevent the car from being stolen.

I can't find the part from the online vendor sites I have tried; but a dealer should be able to order the part for you - it is the little ring around the ignition slot, and can easily be replaced by yourself with just a Torx screwdriver.

Where is the fuel pump located on Volvo S60 AWD, and how to check if it's okay or not?

If the car is starting and running, the fuel pump is ok. It's above the fuel tank, and a pain in the rear to change.

You can test the fuel pressure at the end of the fuel rail - on older models of the 5-cylinder, there is a schraeder valve at the end of the fuel rail on the drivers side of the engine. As I recall, the numbers on an AWD engine are slightly higher - mid-50 PSI without the engine running; high 40's at idle. I can look up the exact specs for you tomorrow when I have my other computer.

If the engine kept cranking and then shutting down quickly, it may have flooded itself. Pull out the plugs and see if they are wet with gasoline, and check to make sure that they are firing when the engine is cranked. Allowing the cylinders to air out, and a tiny bit of oil in each may get the engine to start again - but if it keeps running and then shutting down again, there's another, likely alarm-system related problem.

I solved the problem, was a loose crank shaft sensor.
Thanks for the help!
