V70 XC vs XC70

Post by fotojosh »

Hello Everyone,
I am new to the site and am looking for some advice. I am currently in the process of tracking down a new Volvo. I am torn between getting a 2000 V70 XC or 2001-2004 XC70 and am wondering what members would recommend. With the P2's are there years I should avoid? I come from a jeep background and am pretty handy with a wrench, so I am not afraid to really get in there and work on either model.

Thanks you in advance for your thought! Also I must say I am very impressed with the forum you have here. I have only been on for one day and have learned so much.

Josh

Welcome to the forum. Man, there's a lot of people from Grand Rapids lately! I'm thinking I may be moving there soon as well

2000 models are generally OK as long as the ETM has been taken care of under warranty already (look for a yellow sticker on the throttle body). 1st gen AWD systems are sometimes problematic, but if properly taken care of they can last a long time.

Avoid 2001-2002 models; most of them have/will have transmission problems. If you can afford a 2003 or 2004, go for that one - they have the better Haldex AWD system that holds up better to mileage. I believe 2004 was the first year of the 2.5T engine, which has a little bit more power than the previous ones.

When you decide on a car, be prepared to do some basic maintenance things on it. A transmission fluid change, bevel gear (AWD) fluid change, possibly a PCV system, etc.

In looking for a car, keep service records at the top of your list! They are very important when buying a used car, as I learned with my last one and many here have learned as well.

A learning experience is one of those things that says, "You know that thing you just did? Don't do that."
