2004 XC70 Buying a XC70 today!!

Post by shiloh51933 »

I looked over the xc70 yesterday and she looks really good. The exterior/interior are in really good condition to mint condition, the engine looks really good and the under body looks good. She runs good/sounds like she should sound, everything is dry, everything works properly, the TB was done @ 109,000 miles(proof provided)/now has 140,000, has new matching tires, drives beautifully. Basically I couldn't find any faults w/this Volvo...the 2000 Volvo v70xc I went to check b4 this '04 xc70 was anything far from perfect, looks like somebody took 4 wheels then mounted them on a turd!! The cam sensor lit up the CEL, busted R/F strut mount bushings/blown struts all around, ripped seats, leaking rad coolant, leaking oil, broke turn signals, broken foggies, alignment was way out, tie rod ends shot, the list goes on & on. The only pro was that the AC actually worked after having to jump start the dead battery, I guess that's the reason they were asking 2200.00 for dat piece!! Anyway, this car is going to be driven a lot on a daily basis for the most part so I'm looking for suggestions/recommendations from experienced XC70 owners/techs/enthusiast. Normally I stick to the factory recommendations but since I'm going to be doing heavy driving I wanted to see if members here used the xc70 for similar purpose and what kind of oil/trans fluid there using, any issues with AWD & preventive maintenance I should do asap, are there any recalls I should look into, ect... This past winter sucked driving my Maxima/Volvo 850GLT w/FWD's, so this year I want to be prepaired and we like Volvo.

Mechanically XC70 and V70 Rs are nearly identical. Here's my experience owning an '04 P2 Volvo, my beloved, late V70 R. And here is a huge 90k miles service... fluids, filters and a dozen other things to make it Stage 0.

I could DIY repair my 1997 Volvo 850 n/a with $300.
XC70 with these many miles, make sure you keep $900 available to keep it on the road.
You are looking at servicing heating and cooling, climate, AWD, turbo, ETM, PCV, suspension, brake system, spark plugs and coil, and a 4-month oil and filter change to keep her fit.

Replace battery after taking possession. Replace all fluids, and seals where possible.

Good look on the input...she's really solid but i hear. I thought the electronic throttle issue was resolved b4 '04, I heard they put a better TB on the XC. Suspension has been serviced, Timing Belt was done @ 109 w/ WP, I'm gonna do rear diff and anything else I think it needs but this '04 is really clean. What kind on engine oil does the XC70 like? I've always used Mobil1 5w30 on our '96 850GLT, I use Castrol Syntec w/Titanium on my'99 Lude's(I like Syntec) and Castrol Syntec on my Maxima. I've always used factory recommended fluid brands on our 850(Volvo PWS, Dot4 brake, Volvo blue coolant/distilled h2o and Febi ATF. What octane fuel? I've been using 93 on the '96 850 and a bottle of Techtron once in a while.
