Hi , new here to forum. I have a 2005 volvo xc 70 with about 123000 miles. Installed new PCV after having blue smoke at idle. Still Have some smoke at idle, a small puff here and there but much improved after the pcv change- not blue anymore -

Just after I changed the pcv, I noticed a slight miss or stutter on speeds above 45 . Again , wasn't everyday . THis weekend, noticed miss about 5 times on a longer highway drive , when attempting to change lanes etc.

I have changed the spark plugs, cleaned MAF sensor. NO CEL.

I checked all hoses, etc today and got down to the turbo. Noticed some some shaft play as when I pushed the vein it would tap against the housing. I don't have any experience with Turbos.

Could the smoke on idle and now the miss be caused by a bad turbo or are there other things I should be looking at? Also, know any good places to get a used Turbocharger for a 2005 volvo xc 70 ?

With no check engine light or codes there is not to go on. If it were my car I would try driving the car in a low gear at 5000 rpm (or higher) for 2 or more minutes and see if that has an effect. If the oil burning has left deposits on valves or on valve seats you may have misfires not serious enough to be detected by engine management system. That high of engine speed will encourage valve rotation and could clean some deposits away from the oil burning. It's easy and almost free to do.
If no change then it time to pull spark plugs and inspect for heavy deposits and then maybe compression check.

You mentioned you changed the spark plugs - what did you use, and what is the gap set at? The 5-cylinder engines are extremely picky about their plugs.

+1

It sounds like either the plugs are not gapped correctly or not the kind you should use in the car.

I too have been having the same rough spots while idle and sometimes under driving conditions.
I checked with a code reader and got a P0353 code which when checking says-- Ignition coil C Primary/Secondary Curcuit Malfunction. I take this to mean that the coil is bad and should be replaced, now the Question... Which coil is "C" ? would it be the middle of the 5,or are they in some other firing order? Also whats the correct gap on the plugs? figure I'll check/change that as well.
