850 Glove Compartment will not open

Last week, my glove compartment decided to not open anymore.

Anybody ever had this happen to them? If so - how did you get it open again?

I'm really hope I don't have to due much cosmetic damage to my dashboard.

You're not the only one,i think that 90% of members have/had stuck glove compartment,including me.

Like jablackburn said...whatever you do you will need to break it somehow.

The breaking part is subjective. I have repaired three of mine with no real physical damage other than sawing the hoop in half and then replacing it with a new one along with a new latch assembly. There were really no permanent physical scars to the glove box door or the dash as a result, only scars to my wallet from buying the new parts from a local stealership on the first one.

You just need to be careful when sawing through the hoop. A couple of leftover, L shaped, metal step flashing panels on both sides of the glove box door worked well as a guard against buggering up the pretty stuff while I sawed away through the catch hoop.

This happened to me a month ago. Cut the hook and replace the lock. Its a ten minute job.

1997 Volvo 854 - There is nothing important other than the insurance papers in the glovebox.

Is there less severe method to unlatch.

Leave it locked and add 100 usd to the sales price when you sell for the mystery prize in the glovebox

I am exploring ways to pullout each hinge shaft from below, see item #11...

... and then, tinker with the latch/loop from below, looking up.

Would someone please check the glove compartment for any restriction that would prevent the shaft from sliding out? A photo of hinge assembly for direction of slide would be helpful, etc.
