mixing coolants

I've read you're not supposed to have two different brands of coolant in your radiator.

I purchased my 850 about 4 weeks ago and bought some coolant for it, just for topping up the radiator.

I decided not to get Volvo coolant, figuring it would be more expensive and the guy at the auto shop said any coolant would be ok.

I don't know what the existing coolant is anyway, since I purchased the car from a used car dealer.

Presumably, the coolant I'm using is different to the coolant already in the radiator, which may or may not be Volvo coolant.

How big a deal is mixing coolants? Is Volvo coolant any better?

I have mixed coolant without any ill effects, but in EVERY CASE, the jug it came in said, "can be mixed with any other antifreeze," AND, "will not harm aluminum radiators." Without these statements on the packaging you're playing Russian roulette with your radiator and engine for that matter.
