Engine Mount Discussion

Post by reds70turbo »

I wanted to start a discussion on motor mounts. Particularly if anyone has noticed anything when comparing the aftermarket versions to Genuine Volvo.

At about 120K my lower side mount failed so I installed this: http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/p ... ory_id/109

Fitment and quality were excellent and I was pleased. I then replaced my trans. torque mount and firewall mount with Scan Tech versions. I also installed an IPD top poly bushing.

Since I've owned the car I've always had an annoying key jingling from vibrations while accelerating. The vibrations transferred to my dash once it started getting colder just recently. For what it's worth I had the opportunity to remove my entire dash frame when installing the complete Dark Walnut wood trim set from a V70R. That being said I knew all my dash mounting points were intact and every last torx screw was tight.

I figured it was probably due to the URO (aftermarket) lower side engine mount so when I picked up the oil pan o ring kit and sealant from my local dealer I also purchased a Genuine lower side mount.

I am now approaching 180K, ~178500 to be more precise.

I will say that the Genuine mount's rubber is very pliable compared to the hard rubber on the URO version. In turn my keys no longer jingle while accelerating. Harsh sounding cold starts from inside the car have vanished and just overall much less vibration gets transmitted to inside the cabin.

My Scan Tech trans. torque mount is beginning to show a good amount of wear and I plan on replacing that with either Hutchinson (OEM w/o the blue box) or Genuine Volvo and hope to notice further improvement.

The Scan Tech firewall mount is still looking new at the moment but I'm wondering if getting all OEM/Genuine mounts would provide a noticeable difference....

Anyone else notice anything similar to what I have in terms of aftermarket motor mounts vs. Genuine/OEM?

Thoughts/comments are welcome. :D

One thing I noticed with the IPD Torque rod bushing was that I couldn't STAND the vibration I was getting from the car at ~1200-1500 RPM. I got fed up and switched back to an OEM one within 2 weeks.

I think at the time, although I probably didn't know it, my lower (front) engine mount was probably starting to go. It got replaced with a OEM one this summer. The car drove much smoother; most of my other mounts still look OK, but I'm thinking the subframe ones are going to be on my to-do list soon.

Vibrations are enough to make you think twice about poly. I can live with the bushing I have installed up top but do think I will stick with rubber for the others.

Thanks for replying!

I am thinking twice about poly bushings for the upper mount so spotted this heavy duty one on a UK parts site last week.
Hopefully it will be the last one I install on the car.

Cool alternative! I've never seen that before. Do not fear, the top Poly bushing does not add THAT MUCH extra vibrations. :)

Hey All,

What indications have you had that caused you to suspect bad engine/transmission mounts?

What is the typical replacement mileage on these parts?

How to do you check and what do you look for when assessing the mounts?

Our '99 S70 (110K) has gotten a bit more "buzzier" recently ....the roughness of the engine at idle and during acceleration can be felt/heard a lot more through the steering and dash than previously. I've been suspecting it might be time for some new mounts ...

For the top mount, Volvo's MSRP is 20USD, often we can buy from online dealers for $14 ish, yet that site wants $29 for that? Not to mention most of Meyle parts are made in china. How would I know that? I bought and returned a few of those, and only Meyle thing I used is the front shock mount rubber washers on my M-B ML320 which have failed after only 18 months!
Another thing is the fitment, I bought a Febi once, it just could not fit into the bracket since the mount is 2mm too big.

For the upper mount, you may notice the engine rocking significantly when you shift from R to D.

A jack under the oil pan will tell you if any significant movement is there from a broken front (lower) engine mount. You'll also notice if you can't fit a finger in between the oil pan and lower part of the subframe. The transmission buckle mount, if worn out, is visible just looking at it.

The hydraulic ones are usually ok; I doubt you'll have to worry about those yet.

FWIW, If the IPD firewall mount results in a significant increase in vibrations, you have other bad mounts.

IMHO:
OEM = Good
IPD often = better
Scan Tech = krap.
