I agree I have this setup and mine don't squeal.JRL wrote:OEM Volvo pads do not squeal if mated to OEm rotors.
If so, the install was incorrect

I know this is an old post... But do you care to elaborate JRL? I don't know what "the install was incorrect means"? It's a little vague.JRL wrote:OEM Volvo pads do not squeal if mated to OEm rotors.

Now, I need some advice of REAR brake pads that don't squeal! Please advise for the best pads!
- Current pad: Volvo OEM pads, they squeal like a pig, I applied some anti-squeal compound, no difference, so I need to replace these Volvo pads.
In the past, I also had this issue with Volvo OEM Rear pads with my other car (1998 V70).
Anyway, I am looking at options:
- OReilly BrakeBest D31....$16 made in Mexico
- Autozone MKD31....$16: made in India
- Autohausaz dot com offers tons of choices as below:

So I bought my brakes a couple months ago from AZ because mine were squealing. Thought it was time. Bought the semi asbestos or whatever their middle brand type is. And no grease. Sounds like a bus stopping. Well meineke said volvos just stop like that (some ase cert) :p
My rotor has a lip on it causing a squeal. Sure I need new hardware too lol. But AZ pads are pretty bad on these cars

I've used Autozone's Duralast Gold and Cmax pads (made by Roulunds) for years on my three Volvos and have had no issues. Both the Gold and the Cmax have a nitrile shim and the Cmax comes with new brake hardware and Sil-Glide included. Only drawback is the Cmax aren't available for some applications. Best part is the local AZ has a wear warranty, so I can take them back after three years and get a new set free of charge!

@deepsouth,
Interesting you mention Autozone Duralast. I use Duralast pads (front and rear) on my 2007 Honda Odyssey van because it is convenient, inexpensive and actually much better than Honda pads. For the Honda, the Duralast pads are made in Mexico.
For the 1998 Volvo S70 GLT, I know the Duralast pads are made in India. I may give Duralast a try.

I have found that no matter what type of pad you use, from cheapo to expensive, the key to quiet braking is shims and a liberal amount of grease on all contact surfaces- I used the purple high temp ceramic grease- bought it from Autozone- and I never get a squeal. I have 6 cars, and believe me, I have done a lot of brake jobs.

I have duralast on my V70 now, really no noise at all. Not super clean but not bad compared to the OEM pads. CN, for what it's worth, I use the ATE on my Mercedes and they don't squeak there either. I think the Volvo rears and the MB rears are the same pad actually.

I stop using any of those greases, they all wash off or burn off eventually.
I use copper anti seize, it resists high temperatures, and doesn't wash off and no squeal at all. I put it on all moving parts and the back of the pads. Been doing this for over 10yrs now, works perfect
