V90/960 Memory seat setting problems

Just bought my first Volvo--low mileage 97 V90. Love the car, but unable to set the driver's seat memory positions using the owner's manual procedure. When a numbered button is pushed, the seat goes to a position other than what I set--maybe a default position or a position set by the previous owner.
