Control Arm Should I replace?

Post by GregM »

During the replacement of the the right axle shaft assembly the control arm ball joint seemed a bit loose. I took a video . What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Greg

Why is this a question?
if it's loose you replace it

It is hard to tell from your video since you are spinning it around and moving the whole control arm up and down. I need a reference point. I would replace it if I could feel ANY slack up and down or left and right. You have to grab the ball joint and the control arm an feel if they move as one. Once they start going bad they get worse quickly.
Where in Minneapolis are you fixing your car?

if its a version of the control arm with the more exposed bushings then its a rather easy replacement job to do. and the FCP groton part is only about $40!

Being able to move it back and forth like that indicates it should be replaced. If you've done the inner tie rod, they should both be difficult to move, so that one's ready for replacement!

Use an OEM Volvo control arm,NOT the CHEAP ones from groton or you will be replacing it again

+1 on the OEM control arms.

Don't learn this the hard way like so many others (like me) have: only use the Volvo-branded control arms.

It's a question because I don't know any better and have little experience repairing cars :) But I have to say I'm really enjoying the process. I'm getting a real sense of accomplishment doing this stuff. Unlike my day job troubleshooting Vmware environments...
Thanks JRL I will take this advice to heart. To some the answer may seem obvious but to the inexperienced, not so much.
