Interesting question, I just went out to the garage to see if I could find my old bearings to look at them, I could not find them
I was hoping to take one apart to see how it is assembled. These are sealed wheel bearings and cannot be serviced. I also remember reading in VADIS that the "play" tolerance is something crazy like .008 - .010 inch(es)
Swerving to the right would make sense in calming the left (driver's side) bearing, since your vehicle would be shifting weight to the passenger side...just a guess tho' that is the first time I have heard of swerving left or right to check bearings...I always just tug'd on the wheels...I miss my old Chevy 1/2 ton Silverado, I could at least service and repack those bearings
On a side note, I would replace both if possible. Just for the peace of mind, if you know one is going bad, the other is following right behind it...I would imagine the other one is still factory too.

Also, I just noticed that your profile says you are from Mississippi. Do your roads get salted? Here in Texas we don't have to mess with a lot of rust from salting, but I have seen some really horrible YouTube videos on rusted parts. Could you squeaking also be cause by your suspension components?

No. No salt thank goodness.
My dad once bought a car that was from up north. I was just a kid, but I can remember all of the bottoms of all the fenders rusting out. He was so mad.
The xc90 I bought was from New Orleans before I got it. I checked for that reason. (I even checked to make sure it was a post katrina car.)
Thanks
