Location of air pump relay/solenoid

Post by ds2728 »

Hello,

I have searching this forum attempting to fix my 1998 V70 AWD turbo. I had the code read, which I do not remember the code, but the definition was the "secondary air system". I found alot of information about the secondary air pump system. I have pulled the air pump and hooked it up to 12volts and the pump does not run. So since the pump appears to be bad, I was going to perform the modification to bypass.

I have also checked for 12 volts at the plug to the air pump. I always read 0 volts, should I have 12 volts at the plug and if so are there only certain conditions that will feed 12volts to the air pump?

My 2nd question: Where is the air pump relay located so I can check this.

Thanks, Dave

if you hooked up 12v directly to the pump and it does not run, then the pump is dead. Common failure in these cars as condensation pools in the pump since is at the lowest point by design.

The plug should have power with the ignition switch on. relay is attached to the radiator.

Thanks JDA2000, but the only relay I see attached to the radiator is the fan relay for the radiator. Since I made my first post I found an air pump relay in the master Fuse box located by the shock tower on the drivers side.

But I guess my biggest question would be: what would cause no 12 volts at the air pump plug? I switched the air pump relay I found in the fuse box with the relay marked "starter" then attempted to start the car. It started so I guess the relays are good. But why would I not have 12 volts.

You changed out relay with good one but did you check the fuse?

Sorry that I am in the wrong forum. I could not find any fuse that was specifically for the air pump. The only fuse I found that had marked "air pump" was the 50amp fuse in the master fuse box located in the same box that the relay is located. Shouldn't there be a 15 or 20 amp fuse somewhere for the air pump?

That should be the fuse then, was the fuse good or bad and did you try changing it to see if you could get voltage at the connector? I was recently able to save my air pump by replacing everything else(relay, check valve, solenoid/solenoid valve), but if your air pump is shot then the SAS delete is the way to go.
