850 Fuel Pump - options - what did you do?

Post by mcp »

1996 850 - My original fuel pump gave out at 190k miles. I replaced it with one from the junkyard. That one lasted about 30k miles. I just put another junkyard pump in to get my car running and I'm considering ordering something new so that I have a pump I can rely on.

Option 1:
Order a genuine Volvo fuel pump assembly from FCPGroton:
(And take advantage of their "Tax Refund" sale until March 15th.)

Option 2:
Order a generic fuel pump "insert" from FCPGroton. (Cheaper than the whole Volvo assembly.)

Option 3 - (This is the one that interests me. What do you think?):
I found an EBay seller claiming to have replacement fuel pumps that are the same as the original for $100. (Just the pump. You reuse the plastic housing, but no modifications or wiring changes are necessary.)

From the Ebay listing: "This listing is for one brand new original replacement fuel pump for your Volvo 850 ALL YEARS, S70 1998-2000, V70 1998-2000 C70 1998-2004.

This pump is not made by Volvo. Volvo never made fuel pumps. They purchased them from a fuel pump manufacturer. So did we... This is EXACTLY the same pump that is in your car now, except this one is NEW. Same diameter, same type of connectors. This is not a high output pressure universal pump that made by WALBRO, you do not need to modify ANYTHING to make your car run again. There are NO fuel lines to add, no electrical connectors to solder in place."

new Ebay fuel pump - "same as original"

Has anyone here tried one of these Ebay pumps? Any other sources for the original pump only without buying the whole assembly? If you have tried one of the "universal" inserts, which one? How quiet are they compared to the original? How well did the pump fit the housing?

Option 4:
Get another junkyard pump and keep it with me as a spare.

Option 5:
Buy a Walbro pump, turn up your stereo (to cover the pump noise).

"This pump is not made by Volvo. Volvo never made fuel pumps. They purchased them from a fuel pump manufacturer. So did we..."
Me-thinks this brand is "Yumcha"
I reckon genuine Volvo pumps are Bosch.
Why not buy the genuine Bosch replacement pump rather than the whole assembly.
Checkout what IPD says on the subject...
