99 V70 ABS Module needs rebuilt

Fair enough - Go for what ya know.
I've burned though a few pounds in my life,
but I'll be the first to admit, Victor did mine.
( I was short on time and long on green at the moment.)
6 years later and it still works great!

There's a reason Victor's go forever. I got my hands on one of his last year and opened it up, that's where my "Go big" philosophy came from. From what I can tell he was the only one doing them that way. everybody else was just resoldering it like the way it was.

OK. GOT the picture. If it wasn't for the fact that my father in law is expecting this "abs module repair" to be done properly so that my wife can drive safely, I could laugh at my mistakes too. My solder iron has no settings, just on/off, but I guess that doesn't matter now that I've laid down sooo much solder.

The reality is that I have to fix it today, so my next question is can I pull one from another model year at my local pic n pull?? If not, what is the best next step? Is it possible to order a rebuilt one and have it Fed X to me overnight?

Just a quick post. Iwas able to get a rebuilt one sent my way, thank you, thank you Matt. My soldering can be used to show people what NOT to do. So in the end, my mistake should help others from making the same one.

A guy has to start somewhere. You should see some of my early work!
And that one should still be completely usable, once you clean it up.
If it was never energized, nothing will be smoked and all will be well.

A hotter iron would be a good start. Then a couple toys to remove the solder:
Get a solder sucker ( handheld high heat vacuum unit) at Radio Shack and
a roll of solder wick and remove all of the existing blobs. Then just go back
over it and use just a bit less solder. It may take a few shots, but practice
makes perfect. And then you'll have a good back up unit on hand.
The first one should be entirely salvagable.

I figure it could be fixed. I have not bought the tools suggested yet but I was able to apply the solder gun to each of my "blobs" and while holding the module upside down I was able to drain off most of it. I was also able to separate each stem giving them the space needed between each of them so they are no longer "connected" with all that extra solder. One post made mention that had I installed it looking as bad as it did that I would blow a fuse. I'm assuming they were referring to fuse #14 which I pulled previous to doing any work.

Never give up!! Should there be a next time I'm confident that I will be able to do a better job.

Jeez CGreyGoose,

You'd have to be handed props for:

1 - Having a go
2 - Physically getting that much solder on the board (which I didnt think was possible) and
3 - Checking with this board before you put it back in

Shows you're smart, if a bit crap at fine electronics work.

For what its worth, I soldered mine some four times, badly - before Precopster contacted me and told me to quit while I was ahead. After dropping around to his place, he showed me what a professional solderer can do.
ABS has been perfect ever since.

OK. Got the rebuilt ABS module installed. have checked and rechecked both connectors, disconnected the battery to reset the system, checked that there are no fuses that are blown but....... I'm still getting the flashing upside arrow. Everything else is good. My wife is leaving for a 6 hour drive today and will be gone for a week. Is there anything else I can do to fix the flashing arrow?

The first thing that comes to mind is the sensors at each wheel.
They're right in the line of fire for debris out there on the road.
If you have a misaligned sensor, bad connections, broken wire or
a damaged or clogged up toothed ring that the sensor "reads",
you can see the flashing arrow on a '99.

Pop each wheel and have a look. Hopefully, it's something that simple.
Beyond that, a Volvo shop can read your Volvo specific codes and get you
pointed the right direction. Probably worth the money before a road trip.

When I take the ABS module out of the car to send it off for repairs, do I need to pull the fuse for the ABS in order to drive it?
