2002 C70 (Australia) Ignition Lock Removal

Post by john64 »

Need to repair/replace the ignition lock cylinder and would like to know how to remove. A good description on removal was given by cn90 in November 2010 for a 1998 V70 (without having to remove the steering wheel). However, is this the same proceedure as the 2002 C70? The replacement Volvo part numbers are also different between the two cars. Mine is supposedly 9203820. Thank you.

It is actually not hard to do. You need to remove the t-15 screws that hold the steering column covers on with a very long torx bit screw driver. Once the covers are gone, just unscrew the electrical side of the of the cylinder and then remove the cylinder itself.

do you need to replace the cylinder or is the key rotating and not doing anything and the whole steering lock/ignition key cylinder hosuing needs to be replaced?

john64,

The PN for your 2002 Volvo C70 (9203820) is actually for 1998-2002 models with "immobilizer".
So the procedure should be the same as for my 1998 V70:

DIY: 1998 Volvo V70 Ignition Switch & Cylinder Lock

2004 V70 2.5T 100K+
2005 XC90 2.5T 110K+

To FCPGroton, jimmy57 and cn90
Thank you all for your prompt and helpful replies. All senior members - I hit the mother load.
When the key is inserted it sometimes will not turn at all. It is jamming where inserted at position "0" and not turning to position 1,11, or 111. Problem getting more frequent. No special jiggling helps. It suddenly turns when it decideds to. Because it is not jamming past the position "0" I believe it is the ignition tumbler and not the ignition switch. I'm looking for the least expensive option so will take the lock to an auto locksmith to replace the tumblers.

Two final questions.
1. Do you recommend disconnecting the negative terminal to the battery? Thought I read somewhere it was a safety measure in case the air bag decides to go off! But don't want to do this if not necessary as I don't know what codes are affected apart from the radio.
2. Any suggestions for a good workshop manual for the 2002 C70? Read that Chiltons was bad and Haynes a bit better.
Regards
