Fuel pump Check Valve

Post by volvolove »

Hello, I just traded in my 2000 volvo v70 glt for a 2000 volvo v70 xc because I am in need of the awd. My new car, the xc, has around 121k miles on it. When I test drove it (on a warm day) I noticed that it took about 1 extra second of cranking to start. It seemed weird because everything else felt just like my car, but I just thought all cars are different. Now, after I made the trade, and the weather has gotten colder, it doesn't always want to start on the first try. Even if I turn the ignition on for 10-15 seconds before turning it over, it still doesnt always want to start. However, no matter how long I crank it the first time, it will start right up the secdond time I crank it.
Don't worry, I did my research before posting, so I understand that it might be the check valve in the fuel pump (in the fuel tank) and that I have the option of putting my own in line check valve into the fuel line. However, I wanted to post all of my symptoms before I jump to any conclusions.
This am I went out and turned the key on for a good 20 seconds, turned it off, then pushed on the valve on the fuel rail. No sign of fuel or pressure. So, then I tried it with the key on. Still no pressure. Of course then I tried it w/ the engine running and of course it seemed to have plenty of pressure. So , I shut the car off and tried again immediately and got nothing.

The car is running great. I have been getting 25mpg on the interstate at 72 mph. I even took a highway for 20 miles one day at 55 mph and got 30mpg, so I don't think I have a major fuel problem. Would this be the check valve? I was reading on one post about the check valve and it sounded like if it were just the check valve then it shouldn't lose all of that pressure so quickly after shutting the car down. Given, I did not run it long, and it only idled for a couple of minutes.

Thanks for your input, and thanks so much for this beautiful volvo site.

Just a little of my volvo history. Bought my first one for 500 dollars when I was traveling the country via hitchhiking and other free rides. 1984 240 dl. Appeared to have over 600k miles on it. Drove it hard w/ 6 people and all of our gear. LAsted for a couple years and about 40k w/ no problems b4 i blew the engine.

Then bought a 2000 v70 glt w/ 138k miles on it. Drove it up to 210k in 3.5yrs, and decided to trade for a xc w/ 120k miles on it. Been nervous about the trade because the glt ran like a dream w/ no real problems. Just wanted to share my breif volvo history.

Volvo Love! for life

Do my symptoms sound like that is the problem JRL? IF so, what size of check valve do I need for my fuel line.

Oh I'm sorry. I thought this was a help site, not advertise for yourself site. I'm not trying to be rude, I just am what I am, and I look out for my finances. I guess I had the wrong Idea. I guess I will find this info on my own, unless anyone else can help that isn't just looking out for themselves.

sounds like your fuel pump might be bad and there are links how to cut hole in metal behind L rear passenger seat to access FP and R/R. i've had the check valve prob for yrs and its always pressures up after putting key in pos II for few secs once or twice. you could also try checking the fuel relay 104 if the prob is intermittent

No
2000s have a weak point and an aftermarket check valve fixes this problem 99% of the time
You have a 5/16th in. line

Thank you so much brother. I will look into replacing that. Last night I turned the switch on and off 4 times, then started her right up. I am pretty sure that it is the check valve and I very much appreciate your help.

I had the same problem with my wifes 2000 v70, so I cut a 5/16 check valve into the fuel line right near the fuel rail, and I have not had the problem since, I've been told it's a 2000 model thing???? But I cut the panel out, for access to pump per directions here, did it all, but still happened until I got fed up a bit and cut the aftermarket check valve in.
