2001 XC-70 Engine Oil Leak
I have a pretty bad engine oil leak in my 2001 XC-70 and I am not sure exactly where it is coming from to fix it. It is leaking down between the gearbox and transmission on the drivers side. I know its definitely oil because I have to replace about a quart every two days. Any suggestions of where the leak might be from and possible fixes would be appreciated. I thinking about adding heavier oil to see what happens, or is their any good oil additives that can be used in a volvo without causing harm to my engine.

Well I took it to the dealer to get it diagnosed and they said it was the rear main seal that was leaking and the transmission would need to be removed to replace it. The cost $1800 bucks. I thinking about attempting the job myself for that price but think I am over my head. Has anyone attempted this job? How bad is it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Check the PCV system first to make sure that your cranlcase is not pressurized causing the oil to be pushed through the seal. The only experince I have had with a transverse engine is replacing a clutch on an 80s civic. I took the whole enigine out of the car and then separated the tranny from the engine, this was a good two day project. If it is your first time I would set aside 3 days to do the job. The seal may cost you $20 but it will take some time to actually get to it and then about 15 min to replace and then another day to put the car back together.

I took it to the local shop to get the rear main seal replaced. They pulled the engine and found that the rear main seal was not leaking, but it was actually the rear Cam seal that was causing the leak. It was acting like a rear main seal leak because it ran down right between the transmission and engine. They replaced the rear Cam seal and no more oil leak
