1998 V70 Right Rear Window Regulator question

Post by cn90 »

Hi guys,

I have a question re: 1998 V70 Right Rear Window Regulator question.

All 3 windows (L front, L rear, R Front) work fine, no issues.

The R Rear window does not go up or down at all, and this window is rarely ever used by us over the last 13 years.
- No response from the driver's master switch
- No response from the RR single switch

I am thinking bad window regulator but hate to spend $ on something I rarely need. The question is: in your experience, what is the cause?
- bad window regulator
- bad fuse (I doubt it because other windows work)
- bad wiring?

switches, most often problem for non-function with no motion whatsoever.
Both have to work for the window to roll down from either position.
work the switches rapidly to see if it will scrub the contacts.
The contacts will oxidize and then no connection and no window operation.
Regulators fail in motion, i.e. , window starts down and binds or you hear motor run and no window movement.
Also consider wiring problems where connector is located stuck just inside the post, just inside the rubber boot on harness.

Jimmy Speaks with great wisdom and experience!
For anyone interested ( As posted at VS earlier today) :

Bad Switches for $1,000, Alex!
Pop the switch for that door and Unplug the Switch.
Put 12 volts directly to the motor leads to confirm.

Thanks jimmy57 and BEJinFbk,

So you are saying I need to remove the RR switch (not the Master Switch) to clean, correct?

AND to power up the window to check the condition of the motor and regulator.
Again, and I can't stress this too much: Before putting juice to the motor leads -
Unplug the Switch if you don't want to let the smoke out.

The switch can be opened, some have even had limited success cleaning them up.
Be advised, they were not designed to be "user serviced" ( or even Volvo serviced ).
If you do elect to give it a shot, beware of small parts flying about.
Best of luck!

you also MIGHT want to check an electronics store like Radio Shack and see if they sell a "Contact" cleaner in a spray can. You may have to look on line to find a source.
Just put the spray tube in the tip, pke it into the switch and cut loose. After spraying, work the switch a bit and then drain it and let it dry out-- Good luck.

Thanks boys and girls.

I will clean the RR switch (likely the RR switch b/c the Front Master works well for the other 3 switches).
I'll report back.

FYI< I saw the RR switch at eeuroparts for $19.90, not a bad price at all:

Just because the master works for the other windows doesn't rule it out.
Power has to get through it on it's way to the local switch. Check everything.
Start with the window motor and go backwards towards power. You'll find it.

I'd bet it's the master rr switch not the one on the door. If you can pop the switch out and if it will plug it into any of the other 3 that you know work ,just swap it to test it, you should see if the window goes up and down.
There are little point type contacts inside the switch that can get carbon on them. I have been able to take them apart and clean them but if might be easier to find one one ebay.
