Last winter in Chicago, it was mild, I didn't put on many miles, and I did not feel a need for winter tires.
I went to Traverse City, MI for Thanksgiving, and the sleet has opened my eyes to the need for winter tires.
I have the money to do this; but, I really do not want to invest in rims, too. After all, this is a lease car ;>
I am no tire nor brand expert. I am satisfied with the original tires the rest of the year. I want really good performance in adverse conditions. I want the best money can by -- within reason. Does this make sense?
What do you folks recommend?
What _bad_ experieces have you had with which tires?
What _good_ experiences have you had with which tires?
What do you think?
Best Regards,
helices

I've found tirerack.com to have much good data on tires, as well as user input.
This link for instance is for winter tires for 2004 S60R. You get the idea.
After finding 3 or 4 candidates, I'd first look on Craigslist.com for a complete set of wheels and tires in your area for sale. Perhaps somebody with a Volvo (5-lug wheel) is getting a new car, and they have no use for their winter wheel/tire set. You never know if you'll get lucky. If not I'd just price them locally.
I'd get cheap steel wheels and tires because of the simplicity you get with having a set to switch out when you deem winter to be over. You don't have to worry about taking the car in to a tire shop, and if their schedule is full etc.
