2001 S60 T5 ETM FAILURE

Post by as3178 »

Vexed Is An Understatement When Your Life Was Actually Put In Danger Due To A Design Fault That Volvo Refuse To Acknowledge And Rectify.

I Got A 2001 S60 T5 And My Etm Failed When I Was Driving On A Busy Highway(i Am In Malaysia)and The Engine Simply Stalled When I Slowed Down To About 50kph To Enter A Slip Road And I Nearly Got Hit From Behind. After That The Car Simply Refuse To Idle Even Though I Could Restart The Car. That Made It Almost Imposible To Drive Because I Can't Simply Rev The Engine And Engage Gear As My Car Is Automatic. Eventually My Car Was Towed Back To My House. The Next Day I Got A Mechanic To Clean The Etm And The Car Started Perfectly .......idled For 7 Minutes And It Stalled And Would Not Idle Again. However The Car Started Perfectly Again The Next Day But I Dare Not Drive The Car Again For Fear Of Another Incident. There Was No Symptom Whatsoever Before The Highway Incident And That Was Really Scary !!!!!

I Was With My Wife And Children Then And You Can Imagine How Angry And Upset I Felt when all our lives were put in mortal danger.

Volvo Has Always Claimed To Be A Manufacturer Emphasising The Safety And Reliability Of Their Cars And I Think That Is Real Bull. I Talked To Them And They Would Not Negotiate And Wanted To Charge Me Abt Us$1000 To Fit A New Bosch Replacement Unt ( The Original Was A Marelli). I Bought My Car With Great Confidence In The Safety And Reliability Of Volvo And Believe In Its Safety Philosophy But Now I Am Totally Disillusioned And Probably Will Never Buy A Volvo Again. I Will Tell The Story To All My Friends.

I posted this elsewhere in this forum ......

But ........ next time it happens, disconnect and then RE-connect a terminal of the battery. Apparently, this will cause the computer to reset.

A family member had a similar problem, and Volvo couldn't do anything about it, but a generic roadside assistance mechanic fixed it in a few minutes.

Hope this does it for you!
