Check engine light

Post by jnorton »

XC70 ,2005 136,000 miles Light came on while my wife was driving. After approx 1 hour the car would not stay running. It would start and stall. Had it towed to our local mechanic who replaced the MAF sensor. 1 week later light was back on. I checked the codes and found P2188 & P0101. Also found a mouse nest under the air filter. Same mechanic "who didn't find nest" replaced the pcv but light still comes on with same codes. Plugs, timing belt and water pump changed @100,000 miles.Tired of this mechanic guessing, where should I start.

cracks in hoses from turbo to the intercooler or a cracked intercooler. MAF is excessive for the RPM and throttle and the extra computed and delivered fuel makes it rich above idle. Fuel trim adjustments get so out of whack that it leans it when you are under a load and the leak is worse and when you then ease off throttle it is too lean to run when leakage reduces.

You bought a late model Volvo not being near either a Volvo dealer or a Volvo mechanic????

What is the best way to check for cracked hoses? Just by eye?

The best way is to have someone crank engine, put in R and then hold brake hard and elevate engine speed to make the turbo produce pressure and then listen and run your hand around the hoses to/from intercooler. If that fails to find air blowing out then you'll have to search ends of intercooler. Usually intercooler leaks are at ends where the core and seam are crimped. Only do the test for a minute or so and then let it idle for 2-3 minutes. The trans fluid will get really hot if you do the engine loading too long w/o a break.
