I ask the girlfriend to drive last night and when she sticks her key in the car I see the check engine light quickly illuminate then the orange triangle came on and then all the dash lights when out. It was a shocking experience, so I asked her to shut the car off and then turn it back on. Still no illuminated dash. So we drove it home and of course around the corner a police officer is doing a routine road check. He signals to pull over. so we stop and as the police officer is standing at volvo my gf tries to make the window go down but with no luck. Its like the switch wasn't getting any power. Im sure the police thought we were on drugs or something. She opens the car door and explains to him about the problem we have just encountered with the dashboard and he leaves us alone and on our way.
When I get home I turn the car on with my key fob and the windows are opening and closing but still no lights on my dash. And to be honest nothing is working, no speedometer, no odometer, no rpm, no messages, nothing is working. Is there a fuse or a relay that controls the dashboard?

Low speed network problem. You need to get it scanned. DIM being out is likely a symptom and not the cause. WAY too many expensive pieces to guess at and it may be a wiring issue. The codes will tell you a lot. DF-xxxx codes in CEM would indicate wire fault.

Letting the car sit overnight has allowed the problem work itself out....well sort of. The dash is completely working again, however the yellow triangle appearS after the car is turned on for a few seconds, and also the message;
SRS-AIRBAG
SERVICE URGENT
I have had this message before, and that is when I unplugged the srs module under the seat while vacuuming under there. The message appeared but so did the little guy with the airbag. At present no little guy with the airbag has illuminated. So I am wondering if there could be an easy reset to this message, or if I need to visit the dealer to reset the module?

Actually it could be a DIM failure. Something as simple as the SRS light not functioning properly will set a code and cause the yellow triangle but it could also be something else, like a bad CPU-to-mainboard connection in the DIM which appears to be becoming more frequent as these cars age and can be an intermittent problem. I had the same thing happen on my '02 and it was the DIM's CPU. On humid days it would work, on sunny, dry days it usually wouldn't. Problem solved by a used DIM from an '02 V70 but the process of replacement this way can be involved. Do some research on the Net and go to the VolvoXC Forum for more info. I've posted what I did in more detail there.
Good Luck,
