My 2000 V70R has an SRS fault that is somewhere in the seat. I am guessing it occurred because at one point, this sunroof leaked. Not sure, but it's as good a guess as any.
But, here is the question: would exchanging the seats reset the code? And, if the code is present, will the airbags not work at all as I have heard?
And, are there any differences in 98-00 seats? I am not too picky, as long as the seat warmers work.
Thanks.

The fault will not be reset until such time as it is reset with VIDA / DICE. There is a chance that just resetting it would correct the problem if the leak has been fixed. Just changing the seat won't really do anything for you.
The '98 seat is different than the '99 and 2000 seat and they are not compatible. The '98 has its own actuator for the SIPS bag built into the seat whereas on the '99 and 2000 versions they SIPS is triggered by the controller electronically. On the pre-99 cars the entire SRS, except for the SIPS, is disabled if there is a fault. After '99 it is written into the software and I honestly don't know if the software disables the whole system in the event of a single fault or not. You would intuitively think that the software could simply give the error message and leave the rest of the system in a functional / semi-functional state but I don't write code for Volvo. It may be spelled out in the manual but I have not read about it one way or the other.

I can reset that code for you next time I'm in Boston.
