Misfiring and smelly!

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Misfiring and smelly!

Post by keefer147 »

2000 S80 T6 215,000km: Started misfiring slightly this afternoon (engine was at normal running temperature at the time) then took it for a spin around the block and misfiring increased with flashing orange "check engine" light. I turned the car off, then restarted...misfiring continued and "check engine" changed to solid orange. Smell evident inside cabin, but not in engine.

Am due at mechanic's Monday to hopefully confirm wet carpet on drivers side is from leaking "o-rings" not from heater core itself. Now this! Any ideas what might be the cause of the misfiring and what the possible costs might be? I can't bear the thought of a major expense plus a possible heater core.

I've noticed (for years) hesitation/misfiring when starting out on cool mornings, that goes away after a minute and doesn't return until the next day. Possibly linked to today's problem?

Any thoughts/comments would be much appreciated! Thanks!

The flashing check engine light means that it's misfiring for sure. Pull the codes to find out which cylinders, then check the coil packs on those cylinders - you're probably going to have to replace more than one.

The smell is from raw gas being pushed through the catalytic converter.

Thanks...that makes sense. Can I drive it (to the mechanic) in this state? I don't want to cause damage of course. It's about 10km away.
