My volvo xc90 ('04) on computer info has message: transmission service required. Except this message transmission is working good and smooth,especially when you drive in city. However,when you drive on the highway longer,than sometimes after reducing speed to 80 km/h, transmission switches over to some kind of service mode. I mean,that it is not changing gears anymore and running on high rpm. When I turn off the car and than restart engine,everything works fine and well again until next time same happens again. Same procedures are followed and than I drive further. I have to specify,that it never happens when you are driving in the city - only on the highway after some longer period. I have reloaded car's software at dealer center and it just improved situation in the way that it doesn't happen so often. Except this,transmission is really working good and smooth.

Did the dealer find any trouble codes?
If the message is coming up then there should be a trouble code with info on why the message is being displayed.
Overtemp will cause a first stage limp home as well as a few other problems. First stage limp home is higher line pressure to assure no slipping and locking torque converter sooner and without modulation. Second stage limp home is take off in higher gear as well as hard gear engagement from higher line pressure.
I think from your post you are getting the second stage. Does it take off sluggishly in addition to going to higher RPMS (from staying in 3rd gear)?

Regarding take off it is hard to say sluggishly or not, however I think more like yes. And yes indeed,I also have feeling that it stays in 3rd gear when it happens.
I forgot to mention that first sign of this happening is that "D" (drive mode letter on panel) disappears.And if you drive on a speed higher than 80 km/h you even don't notice it and you can speed up no problems, off course if you do not look at "D" mode letter.Only once you start slowing down than at speed of 80 km/h there is like a slight jerk and it switches over to that service mode. Than off course with speeding up also RPMS go up.
