Auto Transmission Radiator Connector size.

Post by stiffy »

Hey there,

I just changed the radiator over on my V70 2001 24T, using an off-market AutoKool radiator.

The radiator is installed - however, the auto transmission lines male connectors are too big for the built in female connections on the new radiator.

Distributor has tried to help - saying that the standard volvo connectors will fit (using the clips and the addition of a hose clamp to stop the clips coming off), but there is NO way they'll fit (they're circumference is just slightly too wide). It's the same receiving mechanism, but just a bit too small.

The distributor hasn't been able to tell me what size they are, other than the above. They have offered to refund my money - but then I'd have to spend another several hours trying to get the bastard out (not an option, really).

I am in the bush and the car is immobile in its current state.

I have the following options/questions:

1. Drive it 30 minutes with the pipes connected (outside the cooling tank, one pipe connected to the other) - to get it somewhere that it could be attended to by a mechanic.
- How long could I drive with the ATF not being cooled?

2. Replace the new connectors with the old ones from the original radiator. When I removed the old ones, whatever they are connected to inside the plastic cooling tank, moved - gives me the distinct impression that if I change them over, I may not be able to get them back in to the new radiator
- is this an option?

3. Ideally, someone here (because no one on the distributor's end can tell me) knows the size of the connectors and can tell me what part I need in order replace the original tranny hose ends. Would I be able to connect them using hose clamps? Not sure how I'd crimp them on (as they currently are)
- is there a lot of pressure in these pipes or would they need to be properly crimped on?

Hose clamps - are you kidding.

That rad has to come out.

If you can't do it then connect the hoses and drive it slowly to the mechanics. You could buy a cheap external cooler if you were real worried but just drive easy and you will be ok. If you have some old brake line or small copper pipe you can run your connecting lie to it and place it in front of the rad for your short trip. It will act as a heat sink. I have a long piece of brake line that I bent in a "U" that I have used in a pinch as a cooler. But a cheap cooler from the local auto parts store can be as cheap as $20.

If the fittings to the new rad come off ,a second option exists. The distributor could make a phone call to the local Volvo dealer and get the correct measurement and then send you the proper fitting . If the fittings do not easily come out then forget it.

Merde, merde, merde.

Thanks guys. Not what I wanted to hear.

I would assume that it's a matter of changing the connector hoses, surely? I'll get it to the Volvo dealership and have my wallet nicely reamed.

Volvo dealership - utterly unhelpful (any workshop that looks as clean should be a major warning/mechanics with clean fingernails are NOT mechanics).

They sold me 4 yellow O rings (pictured above) - $41. If that isn't a reason to avoid Volvo spare parts, I don't know what is. Even they couldn't believe how absurd the price was.

So, now I have to remove the radiator, package it up and send it back to the distributor.

Can anyone recommend another spare parts distributor in Australia?
