Air Conditioning 2001 S60

Post by lebanontn »

Ok put the car in the local shop and they said they could not fix it and would need to take to Volvo. I have not taken to Volvo and the mechanic at the small shop checked the system and pressure on the high side was 150 and fan turned on and pressure on the low side was 28. The mechanic also said that the compressor comes on for about 5 seconds then cuts off then comes on again and shuts off after about 15 seconds. Could someone please give me some guidance? Thanks!!!! I am very mechanically inclined so would enjoy fixing myself!!

you really need to tell us what is broken and some symptoms.
blows hot
blows not cold enough
blows different temps side to side
noisey
doesn't blow
blows out wrong places
OR???????

Compressor cycles that fast on this system when the evap temp is cold and airflow is low. 99 S80 I am driving now behaves just that way now when it is 74-78 F outside after I have driven it 5 minutes or more. Its A/C is perfect, cools very well.
fast cycling on some is a sign of low refrigerant, on expansion valve system with thermostatic evap temp sensor the cycling means nothing.

Do the pressures sound correct for the system? I was considering removing all the freon and recharging the system. The mechanic that looked at it said it actually had too much freon in it.I don't drive the car so limited on information. All I know is it doesn't blow cold air . I can try suggestions to help in diagnosing the problem. Thanks!!

Ok I have just checked it out and clutch and clutch plate gap is .635 which I believe exceeds the gap tolerance. As I mentioned previously the compressor turn on for 5 seconds and turns off for 6 secs and cycles like that until I turn system off. There is
54 Farenheit temp coming out of center vents and 60 Farenheit coming out of outside vents. Please advise and if I do need a compressor for the 2001 s60 who should I purchase from for best price. Thanks!!

check the pressures with the system running at full max.

If the pressures are fine, and the system is well charged, but the compressor seems to cycle on/off every 10 sec, then the problem could be the clutch gap.

Do a search on clutch gap and correct it. If the problem persists , then you could say you need a compressor.

Ok here is the latest ..low pressure 85psi high pressure 100psi. I did lose some freon when hooking up because I did not have new gauges couple tightened. The clutch is not cycling as before and center vent temps 55f and outside vents 57f
What do you think ?
Thanks

Should bein the 40s but if it's as cold where you are as we are here, it will not operate properly

Well I guess I learned a new lesson today. My first time using gauges and the mistake I made was to open the Low Pressure and High Pressure valves on gauges open and didn't realize until a friend of mine told me I was suppose to leave them shut..lol The high pressure was moving over in to low pressure and thus readings were messed up. The current readings were 25 to 45 psi on the low side and 100psi on the high side and the ac was blowing real cold and the compressor was not cycling every 5 seconds as previously. We will see how she does when it warms up and I will update the post.

Much better. The other readings when compressor is running is not a good sign.....
