1989 Volvo 740 Turbo Overdrive turns off intermittently
1989 Volvo 740 Turbo Overdrive turns off intermittently
There doesn't seem to be any pattern or weather condition. Driving along the car drops out of overdrive and the arrow comes on. The button on the shift handle won't re-establish overdrive. At some point it will re-engage overdirve on it's own. It is very intermittent. I've heard about a sensor that gets clogged and just needs to be cleaned. Can someone direct me to that sensor?

Sounds like you need a new overdrive relay behing the ashtray.

had teh same problem on an 89 turbo wagon with 230K miles. The relay wasn't it so I changed the overdrive solenoid on the left side of the transmission along with new o-rings and it shifts like a champ again.

This same thing started happening to my 88 740 wagon it was the relay that was going out. Got one from the junk yard and works fine now. I believe it was the relay on the back right side, behind the fuses.
