1989 240 Windows and Overdrive

Post by johnny volvo »

I've run into a couple of problems and could use a bit of guidance.

My power windows just stopped working one day. The day before they worked, then they didn't. All four. Of course, I checked the fuses immediately and even replaced them with new. I poked around the switches, everything looked fine. Reading the forum, I was made aware of the relay. I ordered one on line and put it in, but it changed nothing. There is a possibility that there may still be a problem with the relay, as it appears to be a "one size fits all" model, even though the website said it was for a Volvo 240. It's a lot smaller than the original part. Any suggestions?

Now, the fun part, after tearing half the dash apart and then finding the relay was easily accessible by taking out the glove box, I put it all back together, only to find my "overdrive" light on. This is a new issue that I haven't had before. I pushed the button, but it didn't turn it off. If I hold the button in, it goes out but, as soon as I release it, it's back on. I drove the car and it seems to shift normally and the engine sounds the same as always. Should I be looking for something in particular? Any opinions?

I appreciate any input.

Congratulate me! I win the Volvo "Chucklehead of the Year" Award.

After tearing half the dash apart and taking the glove box out and seeing that big, fat, juicy relay staring me in the face, I believed that God was smiling on me and sending me an easy answer to my problem. I checked the numbers on the relay with those in my wiring diagram and they matched. So, I plugged it in and got two problems in the place of one.

Googling the numbers on the relay I removed revealed it to be the Overdrive Relay, not a window relay. Making the switch back, which took all of five minutes, took care of the overdrive issue.

Now all I have to do is find a four-inch tall man with incredible upper body strength to climb into that forbidden space behind the dash where the Volvo engineers hid my power window relay and change it out for me.
