Re: engine sludge problem

I agree completely with the last post.

Saab had the same issue when it went to oil jets under the pistons...all of a sudden "sludge" came into the vocabulary of long time Saab buyers. For years they argued over filters, oil pickups and screens. My buddy and Saab mechanic of 30 years said it's simple. Those oil jets like fresh and happy oil or they get clogged...sludge, piston damage, etc will show up more then in old school engines. Those old school engines were a bit more forgiving...

I drive high miles and go 10K between oil changes on all my Saabs and Volvos...I should do it more often for the turbos sake alone but I've only seen sludge out of 9 Saabs and 2 Volvos in cars I acquired this way often driving most of my cars to 300K miles before giving them aways...

like everyone says its all about how you maintain it. I mean my S70 T5 has 212k and motor is nice and clean still, Never even had the head off. purrs like kitten, I just run Mobil 1 in it and a can of 6cyl restore every oil change to help keep it in top shape. so other than a clogged PCV which I will do with steady warm weather. its doing great, also dont go more than 5,000 miles when it comes to oil changes, even using mobile 1, I mean honestly that is a ton of miles, and some major lucubration its doing, it needs to be changed. also my 98XC which i bought wrecked with 23k, its now at 125k It sits in the garage most of the time, looks like its brand new under that oil cap.

flying up to Massachusetts to pick it up tomorrow..soo excited! I called the dealer where the car was serviced and i found out that the strut mounts, bump stops, and 150k service was done so that is really good to know!

They also said an engine flush was done..now i'm not sure how i feel about that. I have heard that sludge can get clogged up in other parts of the engine, but this was done at 149,744 and the car now has almost 151,xxx

You have been warned about the inherent transmission problems with 2001 models, right? Unless it is a stick.
