1998 v70xc coolant loss

Post by kaneco »

My coolant level drops about a quart every day. I drive 180 miles a day round trip(all highway) to work and have to keep coolant in the car. I don't see any signs of coolant on the engine or on the ground when idling. no wet floors and no smoke from the exhaust. I just recently changed the top coolant hose since the old one had dry rotted. There are no visible signs of leaks from the coolant tank.(the cap is green). I don't see any signs of coolant in the oil either but i do have a severe oil leak. I put 1.5 quarts every other day in the motor.

I'm baffled though - where's it going? That's really an awful lot to be going through.

If it ain't going out the tailpipe, or on the ground, or into your carpets, where the blazes is it?

Try putting some cardboard underneath it when it next sits after hard driving.

Even if it's only blowing out under the car at highway speeds, it's gotta be collecting somewhere, and it's gotta drip.

Thats my delima. there are no signs of coolant anywhere. The coolant "leak" only started after i took the car took the car to the local volvo specialist for the oil leaks. he told me the car isnt worth fixing.

I can believe coolant is dripping out somewhere and not pooling much, but the oil has to be sticking everywhere.

Maybe put it up on ramps and slide underneath it, wearing your dingiest clothes, and eye protection?

DO NOT DO THAT WITH A JACK. Best, two solid ramps. Next best, two jackstands. Next good, two steel ramps. Or, the poor man's shade tree equivalent, put the front wheels under the car, one on each side, so it won't drop more than an inch.

Bring a flashlight and be ready to get your hands dirty. There _has_ to be evidence somewhere.

Actually, this a decent reason to bring it to the nearest gas station garage and offer them $20 to put it up in the air and look for leaks. Nothing beats a hydraulic lift and a 150W work light.
