auto transmission problem

Post by cockers »

I have recently bought a Volvo v70 2005 model with 50,000 miles on it .I have noticed that some of the gear changes are not as smooth as they could be.when slowing down for a roundabout and with the car still rolling i put my foot down slowly and it,s as if it cann't find the gear it wants, but then it does with a thump not a clunck, but the annoying thing is it's not all the time, some days it's as smooth as silk up and down all gears.I have spoken to a Volvo dealer and he said that they could flush the gearbox at a cost of £250 but he thinks that it's more likely to be an electrical problem. What i need to know is if a straight forward flush and fluid change would cure it then i would go ahead, however if i pay my £250 and the problem is still there what next and when does the spending stop until i have found the problem.

50,000 miles - it is a good time to do an ATF change.
Replace the fluid yourself - it is easy and way cheaper than paying $400+.
Do the whole exchange,--full flush--, do not just the drain and fill.
Look around this website and you can find nice instructions.
The Toyota dealership sells the correct ATF - Toyota T IV - in the U.S. I paid around £41 - for the 10 quarts (for the full flush you will need 10 - 12 quarts).
Make sure that before you start you get a new washer for the drain plug - I didn't and mine started leaking.

Did you notice a big difference in the gear changes afterwards?

It will be better, how much who knows
If you go the complete route, flush, download the latest software, reset the adaptions and do the proper drive cycle, it should get back to as new condition at 50K miles

Yes, it got much better - I think that as far as shifting it is as it is supposed to be.
The car still has other issues - one of them is that it is trying too hard to go forward while I'm already stepping on the brakes.
