Anyways... the general recommendation for non-turbo engines is 2 to 3 degrees retarded on the exhaust cam and 2 to 3 degrees total advance on the intake cam. 97 RON fuel should be fine.

Thanks a lot will do .I hadmine advthe intake to bout 9-12 with exh top its great at 3000above ... quite good comsumption....will play around for further testing
Has anyone tried the Tri phase units by Next Level Performance [[email protected]] just would like to know the effect.
Is there any noticible power if I install hi performance ignition coils beside the wear in rotor/dist.....anybody can chip in.

That's not possible. The stock cams are keyed to allow a maximum of 7.5

sorry its at the max 7-8 degrees i'm testing this week on a retarded exhaust cam...will let you know the difference....present the engine sounds a bit like a racing angine with a slight roar and burr burr at idling...runs good thoug with good consumption..got aroung 11.5lit/100km urban use with 8.8 highway at speed around 130-160km/h...

any other upgrade for recommendation just toget the extra hp...say ignition coil, intake valve lift adj if any intake manifold except exhaust system I love the note..thanks

It's quite easy to do on any 850/70 series motors.

Take off the camshaft cover (12mm bolt). Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. Remove the nut holding the plastic flap inside the wheel well. After removing the nut you should be able to see the crankshaft pulley nut. Get something like a bungy cord to hold the flap up. A pair of vise grips will work as well. find a socket that is large enough to fit on the crank shaft pulley nut (I think it's 22mm, can't remember.) Turn the engine by hand using the socket on the crank pulley. Turn engine in a clockwise rotation until the timing marks on the camshaft are at there 10:30 and 1:30 location (looking at the camshaft sprocket like a clock.) The exhaust cam is on your left, the intake cam on your right.

I was told on turbo cars you want to advance the exhaust cam first. between 1 degree and 3 degree no more. On non turbo cars, the rule is to advance the intake and retard the exhaust. Honda's like 3 to 4 degrees for both. I would stay below 3 degrees.

Volvo has allowed a 14 degree swing from advanced to retarded. Which means if you loosen (do not remove) one of the three bolts holding the camsprocket on you will see it's positioned just about in the middle, if the bolt is closer to the right it is advanced, close to the left retarded.

To adjust your cam timing first thing I do is mark where the bolt is at now. Use anything to make a mark on the cam sprocket where the bolt is. Then loosen the other two bolts, do not remove them. Slowly turn the motor using the socket on the crankshaft pulley. Looking at the position of the bolt on the cam sprocket, half way between the middle and the end is roughly 3.5 degrees so you want to have the bolt just to the right of the middle. Start there first. Reassemble the car and take it for a test drive. Remember the Volvo computer usually likes a few days of driving to adjust to the change completely, but you will feel a difference right off the bat.

On my 850R I advanced the exhaust roughly 2 degrees to help compensate for the 2.5" exhaust. The 850R 's have larger turbos 16T verses the turbo and T5R which have 15T, which also doesn't spool as fast. When I advance the exhaust timing the car became easier to drive, where prior to the cam advance you had to wait for the turbo to spool, even normal driving was no fun pushing harder and harder just to keep up with traffic. Now the car drives very smooth and seems fast even when not trying.
