I have an 02 V70 XC turbo ocean world cup limited edition 145 K and I have had it at 4 shops up through
today. It initially started with an check engine light and drove it 6 miles home and then had it flatbedded
over to a local shop. Code 00016, related to cam sensor and they said they couuld not do the work. After
speaking with a friend who is an engine specialist, we realized tran fluid had not been changed since 40K.
Brought it to an A plus rated transmission shop and they flushed and changed the fluid. Got it out of the shop
and it drove lousy, with no power under foot and at times it would just feel like it went into neutral. Called
local Volvo shop and they found bad turbo valve, sensor and needed tune-up and quoted $950. I said no thank
you and brought it to a very reputable shop that works on volvos and they did the same job for $560, yet we still
have the same problem. They said they would bring it 10 miles away to volvo and have them do the software
upgrade on the tranny, but apparently it has already been done on this car. (I bought it used at 33K and so perhaps
it was done then?) They are now talking about a rebuilt tranny and are giving me an estimate on it.
They were talking about 3500 for rebuilt and labor?
Have a rebuilt transmission put in or?

If you are thinking about rebuilding or replacing your transmission, I have a potential solution that might interest you. I have an AW 55-50 transmission that is coming out of the wrecked family wagon, a 2001 XC70. It was installed on 22 June 2010 by the local Volvo dealer to replace the original, which was failing. It has only 9612 miles on it, and has worked flawlessly since installed. Paperwork from the dealer lists the value of the tranny as $3700. I am asking $1900. Shipping (from Long Island, NY) would be actual cost at your expense, or if you are in the region you could pick it up.
Buying this tested unit and having it installed (at roughly $1000 labor according to an expert on this board) would be a cheaper and possibly more reliable approach than having yours rebuilt.
Please let me know if you are interested.
Thanks!

[quote="jda2000"]did the shop that changed the fluid use the correct fluid?
If it was running fine prior to the flush I would bet they used the wrong fluid.[/quote
When I brought it into them I specifically told them that it had to have Volvo only fluid and
they called in front of me and quoted #21 a quart and so the total for flushing was $272.
When I picked it up they told me it was running good....and so I called them yesterday and
spoke with the owner/operator and asked them some questions, including who was it that
test drove it afterwards? He suggested that I bring it back to them and they will check it out, he
told me he has the volvo software, I asked if there would be a fee and they said no. It is currently
70 miles at a shop that I trust...they gave me a price of 4300 which includes a rebuilt directly
from Volvo.

did they use the big bolt on top of the tranny to refill it. Loosening that big bolt won't allow the tranny to engage into third.
Again I ask you, was the tranny shifting fine before the flush? If it was, then the shop screwed up some how.

Yes, the tranny was shifting fine and I drove it about 30 miles with the check engine light on and it drove great like it always had.
The tranny oil was brown/black and had not been changed since 40K, (now @ 145) yet the part that bothers me is that the owner/operator saidthat it drove fine after the flush. Not true. I called the shop yesterday and asked who test drove the car, which I did not get an answer on. They are not a volvo shop, they are a transmission A plus BBB shop.... and they said to bring it in and they will check it and test it at no cost. He also told me that "He has volvo computer software now"....not sure if that was before or after the oil change. The shop its at now drove it over to the Volvo shop nearby and software upgrade already done, and he was driving it 40 and 50 but it was not shifting properly and he was driving in the alternate manuel...said he had trouble in 2nd and 4th

The latest is that I am sending it back to the shop that originally did the trans oil change. The car was working great
before I brought it in there, aside from the check engine light. I have had the check engine light taken care of, as it was turbo sensor and valve. That shop documented that there was one quart of fluid too much in the transmission. I am holding the shop that did the trans fluid change responsible for their work. They are a BBB A plus rated shop and I have spoken with a few people and they are known to do good work and so thats what I am expecting from them. It will get towed over there Monday the 25th
